The Steamer seemed to have great reviews so my family and I decided to stop by on a Friday night, our last night on vacation. The wait was about 35-40 mins, not too bad except it was raining and there was no where to wait except the parking lot. My husband ordered the blackened shrimp platter, I got the crab cake platter, kid 1 got the kids grilled shrimp, and kid 2 was going to share my crab cakes. We also got a bushwhacker and a rum punch, and half dozen oyster rockefeller as an appetizer. The oysters were good, very tasty and fresh. The drinks were.... Meh. This was my first bushwhacker and I wasn't impressed, and the rum punch was unmemorable. As soon as our platters arrived I was disappointed. The crab cakes looked like wet bread patties, and as it turned out there was hardly any crab in them. It was more like a seafood patty - mixed with various seafood, no seasoning or binder to hold it together. The blackened shrimp looked like it was steamed only. There was no char and no seasoning and didn't taste fresh. The platters came with new potatoes and ears of corn. The potatoes were really good but the corn was over cooked. Our bill was $80 and the only redeeming thing was the oysters and the potatoes. Save your money and go somewhere else!

I'm debating a 3-star or 4-star for this review. The food was good. It was a nice change from all the fried seafood places around. My husband and I split 1 lb or royal reds and a cluster of crab (comes with corn on the cob, cole slaw, and sausage). We had some service issues, however. It definitely was busy, but we had problems getting seated. (They seated two parties who came in behind us at tables that were appropriate for the four of us, and then put us at an awkward bar type of seating "temporarily" until a table opened up, but told us we could go ahead and order and then move when something else was available.) We also didn't get all of our food the first time. We'd probably give it another shot, hoping that it was just a fluke that night regarding the service.

We were in GS for Memorial weekend. I don't know what wait times are like under normal circumstances... The wait at the Oyster House was 2 hours. 2 hours! Are you insane? Is the food prepared by Jesus himself? I highly doubt it's THAT good. So we went to the Steamer and waited like 30 minutes. Our waitress was very nice but didn't really come around very often. Our food was delivered cold, like it had sat waiting to be picked up for a while. My corn was cold. My potatoes were piping hot though and were delicious. I've tried to order scallops in GS 2 years in a row now and 2 years in a row been disappointed. Are these little buggers frozen? Where is Gordon Ramsey? Are they just cooking them to death? I'm picturing 5 giant delicious plump juicy bacon wrapped scallops but instead get like 20 tiny dense chewy can only taste the bacon scallops. Pretty underwhelming. However, thanks to those potatoes and the suggestion of the waitress to try my first ever Bushwacker, the meal experience was redeemed! Those things are delicious! :) I'm not sure I'd recommend this place, honestly? ......I mean.......I understand they were busy so I guess I'd give it another shot and order a fish dish? Boyfriend wasn't too keen on his boiled shrimp and oyster dish either. ...Not sure what the better dishes to try are? I did appreciate the steam coming off the building. That was cute :P

Food was decent.....nothing great. We got a steamed platter for 2 with oysters, mussels, shrimp, and crab leg clusters $38. Plenty to eat but some of it a little overcooked.

  • Cori V.

A disappointment. We ordered the mix and match oysters (Parmesan, Cajun, Mexican). Some were smaller than expected and as compared to other restaurants in the area. The Parmesan were good. The Mexican oysters were spicy BBQ sauce covered with cheddar cheese and were spicer than the Cajun. We ordered the platter for two which consisted of corn, potato, shrimp, crab legs, and sausage. The entire platter was tasteless. The food was cooked well as in it wasn't over cooked. There we no flavor. No seasonings. Nothing. Tasted like bland meat including the sausage. This was an expensive disappointment.

The Cajun Crawfish Oysters were AMAZING. Best non-raw oysters I've had in GS, and we've been visiting the island for 18 years now. The only downside was the broken bench seating against the wall inside...any time a person in our party, or anyone else sitting on the bench, moved then the whole bench leaned forwards. Great service, great food, excellent margarita though.

We chose this place due to the reviews that my brother-in-law read. It did NOT let us down! We started with baked oysters (Rockefeller, Mexican, and Cajun). The Rockefeller and Cajun Oysters were absolutely to die for and the Mexican Oysters were right there with them (I'm not a big fan of Jalepeno's). Family members had a Raw and Parmasean Oysters. They were great as well. We followed up with 6 Crab Leg Clusters and we didn't stop until every piece of meat had been eaten. I highly recommend this place to anyone that likes Oysters or Seafood. My brother-in-law had Steak and Shrimp and said his steak was fantastic. Do Not visit Gulf Shores and miss this place.

Everything the group I went with loved everything! We even talked about coming again while we were here! The best place we have been to in gulf shores yet. Service is great! Tiffany, was a great waitress! Any time before 6 or around 6 is a good time to come we did not have to wait! Food: "Gumbo was okay... But pink pony pub has better." "Royal reds were amazing!" "Bacon wrapped scallops were delish!" "Asian grilled tuna steak was kinda small but was still filling. Would recommend and would get again." "Chicken Alfredo was surprisingly good for a seafood place." Drinks: Bushwacker, snake in the grass, and Bahama momma were very good!

This place was delicious. My dad and I split the 1lb of shrimp and 1dz of oyster platter. It came with cole slaw, corn and sausage. The shrimp were cooked perfectly and tasted very fresh. They oysters were not gritty and also tasted fresh. There were many sauce options as well. The corn needed some seasoning, but the sausage was perfect. We sat outside in their large patio, which was nice. Parking is ample in their lot and on the street, but be careful, some openings on the street aren't actually spots. Oops!

Very good! Plenty of seating available when we went around 5:00. Fast service. Prices are comparable for the area. Had a nice family dinner.

Tasty. We had the steamed shrimp with new potatoes corn and sausage. Bushwacker was great. Thank goodness for the heaters on the patio.

We stumbled upon this place on Easter Sunday after another restaurant we wanted to go to was closed, and I have to say that it has been the best seafood we have had in Gulf Shores/Orange beach...this being our second year vacationing here. We ordered the seafood platter for 2, and the portion was huge with a great selection of different seafood...you can order raw oysters for that platter instead of steamed, and that was a bonus for my husband. We had enough to share with our two children, and we just ordered another lb. of Reds for our 8 yr. old. Service by Ashley was outstanding, and I recommend asking for her upon your arrival. She was fun, upbeat and honest about menu selections. Definitely looking forward to returning here again!

  • Michael B.

I've been to this place several times. It's not bad, nor is it great. The steamed seafood, new potatoes, and corn are the best things to get and the prices aren't bad. The steamed seafood is not spicy -- no Old Bay or Zatarains type flavorings. If you stray from steamed items, results can be iffy. One in our party got the crab cake Julie. It was not good at all and the experience was made worse by a fingernail found in the crab cake. On that trip, the catch of the day was trigger fish and I had a grilled trigger sandwich. It was quite good.

  • Savannah G.

Terrible service. The hostess made zero effort to accommodate our small party. Gave us a pager and told us the walk the marina. 30 minutes later and the table thst she claimed she was waiting to leave so she could seat us had just received their dinner. The restaurant wasn't even full. There were empty tables all around.

Great atmosphere! Got the 1/2 lb shrimp and crab cluster steam dish. Crabs were delicious. Can't wait to go back.

Blah. Extremely disapointing!!! Overpriced poorly prepared food! Not a lot of positives about this place! We will not be back!

  • Wendy L.

Yum!!! Seafood was awesome!! We purchased Little Lagoon Steamer tray for 2 and was way more than we could eat! Snow crab, steamed shrimp, Royal Reds (I didn't eat these my husband did), muscles, oysters, sausage, new potatoes, shrimp slaw, and corn! Would definitely go back again! (Bring BIG money for a family :))

My family and I love this place!. Between the seven of us we get an assortment of food and no one has any complaints!.

This place was a nice break from all the fried seafood we've been eating on vacation. My family split the small combo and added another 1 lb of shrimp and two crab clusters, and the food was enough for us to be satisfied. The food was good, the service was good. We left happy. We went in around 4 pm on a sunny Wednesday and there was no crowd or waiting.

    (5)
  • Patrick R.

Food was good the atmosphere was comfortable but the service was a disappointment. Had to wait forever for the check then it was wrong. How do you get the check wrong for one guest? Not sure if I'll be back here, like I said the food was good but not good enough to put up with bad service.

The Steamer was a great place to grab seafood in between sets during the Hangout Festival. Situated conveniently right outside of the main entrance gates, we were able to snag an outdoor patio table relatively easy around 7:30pm on Friday night. We sampled a bit of everything - steamed oysters, a tasty crab dip, and - you guessed it - a plate of steamed seafood! Everything was really well seasoned. Not too bland, not too salty. Partnered perfectly with a cold Bud Light. Costs were on par with the other seafood establishments near Gulf Shores, about $35 per person for appetizer, main course and beers. I would happily pick this place over the Shrimp Basket (even though they are totally the same company, just different names and about a block apart).

We had a fantastic lunch here. The place is very casual, friendly, and has excellent service. We walked right in and got a table with no wait. Although, the restaurant was quite busy. We started with a dozen oysters on the half shell which were mild and fresh. Then we tried the mixed baked oysters which were excellent, including the Cajun oysters. Next we ordered the large steam tray, which was loaded full of goodness. It had Royal Red shrimp, gulf shrimp, oysters, muscles, snow crab clusters, red potatoes, corn, and sausage. What a feast and for around $20 a person you could not beat the price. I would recommend this place to friends and family.

  • Jennifer B.

The only thing positive about this place was the oysters. The shrimps were tough and chewy. They were old and tasted like bait shrimp. And the Maui sliders were just ok. The service was horrible. And when brought to our servers attention that the service was lacking his response was "its my first waiter job. Can I give you a free dessert?" We simply needed a straw for a 3 year olds drink and lemons for the oysters. Oh, and crackers because we waited almost two hours, seriously!

We came here as a group of 12 but sat at separate tables to try and make it easier for the staff as they seemed frazzled from the second we sat down. After about 8 minutes our waitress came over to take our drink orders. They all came out at different times spanning about 15 minutes and this is where her "it's not my fault and here's why" reasoning came for everything that went wrong with the whole meal. My drink, a piña colada with a floater (extra shot of alcohol) came out and it was half white, half pink and mediocre at best. Then was the appetizer order. I ordered bacon wrapped scallops and they actually came out quite quickly and tasted well. They have a huge selection of oysters on their menu, so many people from my group ordered these. Just as with our drinks, the appetizers all came out at different times, with the last plate of oysters coming out just minutes before the entrees. She came around while we were waiting on our food and asked us what we had all ordered thus far so she could start splitting off the checks, evidently she wanted to get out of there as quickly as she could and didn't care who knew it. When our food was finally making it's way out, she was just as scattered and frazzled as she had been this entire experience and the food took about 20 minutes to all come out, which she again blamed on the kitchen instead of herself. I ordered the blackened triggerfish with new potatoes and it was quite awful. There was no blackened flavor on that fish at all, it was extremely overcooked, and sitting in a pile of oil. The new potatoes were overcooked and mushy and lacked any flavoring at all. The corn on the cob that comes with all specialty plates was overcooked and completely smothered with butter. The cole slaw also came with the meal and was nothing more than raw vegetables with a large amount of mayonnaise. I ordered another drink while waiting for the meal and she finally brought it out about 15 minutes later saying "sorry the bartender already left so I had to make it myself" while spilling half of the drink on my friend's back. Overall, the restaurant was not worth the hassle or the money and if you are looking for good seafood or dining experience in gulf shores, I would recommend just cooking for yourself instead of trying The Steamer. They seriously need to work on more training for their servers and cooks.

Great steamed healthy seafood! The Royal Red Shrimp are out of this world. Very good place for good service and if you havent tried the deep water shrimp they call Royal Reds, whow very sweet kien to lobster. All around great place to go!

Stopped for dinner just now and it's a good laid back beach joint. Didn't expect anything too amazing food wise considering it's one of many beachside restaurants. I had the crab cake platter and the taste was good but the texture was very weird and it just fell apart. One thing I can say about mine and the whole family's meals is that it's the most butter we have ever encountered in our lives. Overall not bad but nothing too great.

Awful. Overcooked oysters. Don't waste your money. This place had an awful view and when they Overcooked our oysters, they didn't offer to redo or take any payment off. This is an area that people go to eat seafood, I was disgusted. I give them a ZERO!

My wife, two daughters (13 and 18), and I ate there on Saturday (05-30-2015) after checking in to our condo, just down the street. It was our first attempt at finding a location that didn't serve just fried seafood. We ordered the Baked Parmesan Oysters for an appetizer, and they were really good. For entrees my youngest daughter and I shared a Little Lagoon Steamer Tray for 2 that was filled with with New Potatoes, Corn, Slaw, Sausage, Royal Reds, Crab Legs, Oysters, Mussels and Shrimp. It was a huge amount of food, but it was all steamed really well and seasoned perfectly. Neither my daughter or I understood what all the fuss about the Royal Reds were....they were alot of work for marginally better shrimp, and we didn't even eat all of them. My wife ordered the Grilled Scallops entree with new potatoes and slaw. Her scallops were not impressive at all and tasted frozen and were puny in size and very rubbery....in short, don't order them. Our oldest daughter ordered two crab leg cluster basket and was pleased with the crabs...even if they were a bit of work. In the end, the food was ok; the coleslaw was the best we had in Gulf Shores (my wife would buy it by the bucket if she could). We sat outside, and while the view wasn't spectacular, it was nice to smell the salt in the air and there was plenty of breeze to keep us all cool. We would go back for the oysters and the slaw.

Be hungry when you go. We got the bay platter for the three of us and it was too much. Blue crab claw appetizers were awesome. Gumbo was ok, nothing special. On the platter was lots of royal red shrimp, snow crab legs, steamed oysters and mussels. The shrimp had a good flavor, but were over cooked. Having grown up on the Gulf coast, I didn't get think the royal reds lived up to their reputation. Give me good Texas pinks. The crab legs were excellent and the oysters and mussels were good. Waitress did a good job of serving, but I did have to ask for some things (more water, trays etc.) Over all a good place to eat, but could have been a little better.

This is a classic beachy seafood place. They offer several types of oysters, which is why I went. I got raw and parmesan baked. The raw was as advertised: raw. They were all decent sized and clean. The parmesan was a let down. Basically raw with some cheese heated on top for 4 more bucks. We also got a mahi mahi sandwich, and that was quite good. Why not 5 stars? The sides. The sides were gross. Narsty potatoes and floppy sweet potato fries were our selections. Otherwise, good service and convenient location to Beach Blvd.

Decent wait to get in but it was good. Asian shrimp was good. Crab cakes weren't bad either. Reasonably priced. 3 of us ate for around $50 and that was with a few beers. Would go again.

The charbroiled oysters were perfect and the service was wonderful. It was a relaxed atmosphere and tucked away from the hustle and bustle.

Good potato salad good shrimp - stick with the local favorites. Avoid the steak really salty and difficult to get the temperature right.Crabcakes definitely not recommended.

Good was ok if you were eating a hamburger or grilled chicken fingers. I had the mussels. They were cold and no flavor. Service was horrid. My 12 yr old son had more manners and grace they this young lady. Not planning on going back to this joint.

We went mid afternoon on a Sunday - we were one of three or four tables. Service was good, but not awesome. We ordered the medium sized steamer platter to share between two adults and three children (who often eat like adults). It was exactly the right amount of food, and a reasonably fair price for how much seafood was served - the portions were very generous. The seafood was hit and miss. The shrimp were great. The "Reds" (local, large shrimp) were obviously frozen for some time and some were mushy and not so fresh tasting. Oysters were tasty, and so were the mussels. The snow crab legs were very tasty, but um, SUPER not local (like the mussels.) The sides - similarly hit and miss. The coleslaw was tasty and fresh. The potatoes were... potatoes. Nothing to complain about, but nothing to write home about either. The boiled corn was straight up terrible - I don't know how you wreck that, but YUCK. We did not eat it. Ambiance was great - huge picnic tables facing the ocean. Peeling shrimp ocean side is a true pleasure. Rustic and fun - right off the main drag. I wish local seafood was easier to find in Gulf Shores - I can't, for the life of me, figure out why it's so elusive. This place was a great change of pace from standard fried fare, but definitely not as good as it *could* be. We'd go again, but maybe add a daiquiri or a couple of beers to the experience in the future - that might improve the experience.

You could not hear yourself think in this place. It was crazy. I am writing this review in June but we were actually there in April. It wasn't spring break but you would have thought it was. It didn't help that the family at the table behind us were trying to outdo each other talking but hey, they had to keep up. It made for an awful meal. No way to talk to each other. The food was better than average but not by much. It was not a relaxing meal. I wouldn't return.

Awesome place. Our waitress Ashley couldn't have been better. She did share that as of one (1) month ago they did NOT have any Dungeness crab anymore. :-( That was one of the reasons we went, but we were NOT disappointed. I had 1/2 lb royal reds & 1 snow crab cluster $16.99 & husband had ribeye & grilled shrimp (I think $19.99). My husband helped me eat my snow crab legs. A lot of food, plus we got an appetizer-crab, shrimp & Parmesan dip. Plus 2 adult beverages. $82 Not a bad price. Enjoy :-)

Awesome food! The different versions of oysters were incredible and the Crab Julie was exceptional. We had 3 couples and really enjoyed our evening. The waitress was very nice and attentive for making sure we had full drinks. Highly recommend if you like oysters and other seafood.

I didn't have an issue with anything except the portion sizes. We fed a family of four for approximately $80 including the tip, but I left hungry. I ordered 1/2 pound of reds and a snow crab cluster. It came with corn on the cob and some boiled potatoes. The shrimp was awesome, but the crab legs and veggies were tasteless.

Since my tip I added last night, we returned as a last resort during a torrential downpour here on the coast. We were about 9:30 getting to the place. It's peak season, mind you, and for some reason this city is a ghost town. There's was only one other family in the place. We sat down and ordered crab claws as an appetizer. They were out. Yay! Imagine folks wanting to eat crab on the beach and not having any to prepare for them. Okay. No biggie at this point. My kids ordered grilled cheese and honestly, they looked delicious. I had a bite and they were very good grilled cheese sandwiches. Kids happy. Momma happy. My brother and I both ordered the 1/2 shrimp 1/2 Dungeness crab leg dinner platter that comes with sausage, corn, potatoes and slaw. Since we had skipped breakfast and lunch, we were famished. Slaw was excellent. Reminded me of KFC. Potatoes were typical. Corn had a great flavor. Shrimp was very mushy and many of them hadn't been purged. To some that's not a big deal, but I'm not really into eating fecal matter from anything. Let's back up to us placing this order. They are out of the Dungeness so she said she would sub snow crab. My thought was that she would bring more since there was an inconvenience and I would pay the 20.99 and have my fill of delicious little dancing crab leggies. Negative. I got one cluster of an amputee crab set of legs. Now I know one can't X-ray vision into each leg, but these jokers had very little meat. It was good meat, but it didn't quench my hunger for crab legs. I wasn't charged the 20.99, but couldn't they have done a little extra since they didn't have two of the items I had ordered?? Customer service, people. The sausage was the size of one of those cheap red hot dogs. You got one. It was cut in half to look like two. Portion was not platter size or anything spectacular. Some of the stuff had a good taste while other stuff was icky. We probably should have ordered 4 grilled cheese' and called it a night. You could tell they wanted us out of there as they slid garbage cans and such across the floor behind us making us jump in our seats. Our waitress was pleasant. Nothing over the top. This wasn't a memorable place. 60.00 later we were rushed out and still hungry. No one spoke to us or thanked us for coming in or anything. I can say I've been now and will mark this one off my list. I'm starting to get discouraged with this city's food options. I will say my glass of water was delicious!

Being from New Orleans,I am a seafood snob and often disappointed. You would think "hey, I am at the beach the foods got to be fresh"; time after time it is not. This place was a pleasant surprise. I went with a bachelor party of 20 and we were in and out in an hour and a half. Everyone was pleased. I did not hear one bad word said about the food. I had the crab cakes they were great. Side note: they have no fried food. All grilled, baked or steamed

This place is pretty impressive, I never expect too much near a beach because it's often easy to make money off bad food but at The Steamer everything is done very well. Gumbo to start the meal was very good with a nice deep color and great spice, it was woefully light on sausage, shrimp, etc. but otherwise was one of the better gumbos you would expect at a restaurant in New Orleans or anywhere. Baked oysters were not cheap but really good with a bunch of different preparations available and we loved the Bama with red pepper sauce. Mahi Sliders were tasty once you added some hot sauce but the fish was about half the size of the bun so it would have been nice to have a bit more fish. In terms of the steamer platters it was fun to try the royal red shrimp which were a bit more delicate and sweeter plus the standard gulf shrimp were also very good and the plate also came with some nice sausage and well-cooked potatoes and corn. There was a $1 beer happy hour special when we were there on a Sunday for lunch and it appears there are a bunch of lunch and happy hour specials during the week as well which make The Steamer a fairly affordable option. The fact that there's nothing fried on the menu is almost unheard of, it's just fresh seafood cooked well and you can still taste the product. Imagine that.

Went on a weeknight was pretty empty but every time we go by it was pretty packed. We ordered the steamer platter for 2 but was plenty of food for my husband five year old and I. Came with great sides!! Great drinks aswell! Deff worth ur money.

Terrible. Terrible service. No soap or towels in bathroom so how are the employees washing their hands? We sat for 1hour and 20 minutes for food. Finally asked the manager and received food that wasn't worth eating. The scallops were so tough I had to ask for a knife to cut them. Not one thing was ever cleaned from our table the entire meal. Asked for drinks multiple times before receiving them. The whole experience was terrible. Asked for our check multiple times. Do not come to this place. If I had one last meal and it was between this and nothing, I would choose nothing.

The day I went there was no one in the restaurant. The hostess saw me and then looked the other way, making me wait a few minutes to be seated. When I was finally seated, I realized she'd also be waiting on me. When I began asking about items on the menu, she seemed not interested in helping. I actually got up and left before ordering - one of the few times I've ever done something like that. Not sure about the food, but the service was terrible!

Best seafood on the Gulf! Hands down! The Shrimp, Crab and Alfredo Dip Appetizer is amazing, and you've gotta try the Reds and the Snow Crab Clusters. First place we stop when we are in town.

This place is ok. The food is ok if you don't want to wait in line. I had shrimp and crab legs. The shrimp was spicy and it was like they threw all the spices on top of the shrimp after it was boiled. I probably won't be back unless the other places are too crowded to get in.

    (2)
  • Joni J.

The seafood is good although there wasn't enough for the prices they charge. It was cool the day we were in town so we ate inside. It was cramped, dark, hot and damp inside and my seven year old made sure to announce that it stunk. lol If you dine here, eat outside.

One of the best places to eat in gulf shores. The steamed platters are perfect for any size family to share. Large portions, fresh seafood, perfect place for a vacation dinner. I've been coming to this place for over 10 years and will continue with this tradition, this place keeps getting better. Highly recommended!

Each year, I have hope that I will get a good meal here. Still waiting. Though the staff, works hard, it doesn't make up for the food. We had oysters to start, raw, they were about the size of a quarter - way too small. I had the flounder, it was rubbery and flavorless. I think after 10 years of coming, we have concluded to due more cooking in the condo. It just isn't worth going out every night.
